The beginning of September heralds a

few changes to train fares across Cornwall and Devon. Changes to the timetable

include improvements to the Saturday service. The changes are covered in the

new Saltash Rail Users Group SRUG timetable which was out in May.

Off

Peak Return

A few of the changes affecting Saltash

include the Off Peak Return from Saltash to Plymouth which was due to go up

from £2.90 to £3.00 this month but SRUG have

successfully argued a reduction in price for this ticket to just £2.50. First

Great Western have agreed to this reduced fare and the new £2.50 Off Peak fare

came into force yesterday 6th September 2010.

If you have a railcard this drops to just

£1.65, half the cost of a bus fare which is great value. For the under 16’s the

savings are just as good with the Off Peak Return fare being half an adult fare

of just £1.25. This also affects the Group Saver price; so now 4 people can

travel to Plymouth and back for £5.00, down from £5.80.

Celebrations

The Looe Branch rail line is

celebrating its 150th anniversary. For more details on events on and

around the line over the coming weeks download the Looe program from the Great Scenic Railways website.

As part of these celebrations there

will be steam train trips on the branch line on Sunday 19th and Sunday 26th

September. A connecting service pulled by a vintage diesel will travel to

Liskeard on each Sunday morning and will return pulled by steam on both

evenings. The steam train will make a number of trips on each Sunday on the

branch. For more details visit the Vintage Trains’ website.

Richard

Bickford from SRUG said, “The train from

Plymouth to Liskeard and back again will call at Saltash on both Sundays and

you can board or alight a steam train at Saltash for the first time in decades!”
