CAMBORNE’S Jason Pascoe demonstrated his power and strength to win the inaugural Roseland Triathlon .

The event attracted interest from the length and breadth of the country as more than 100 competitors took part in one of the most idyllic courses on the triathlon UK.

But it was Tuckingmill’s Pascoe, who led the field home in a time of 1hr 31mins 33secs, more than a minute ahead of second placed John Picton, from Guernsey. Bodmin’s Matt Davies was third.

Jenny Phillips (Midhurst) was the first lady home in a time of 1hr 44mins 32secs, followed by Saltash’s Jo Church, with Rebecca Windemer (Tavistock) third.

In the relay event Veryan’s ‘Old & Bald’ were home first (1hr 42mins 4secs), followed by Wood N’Beam and ‘Bottom Gear’ (both Portscatho).

Other notable performances were that St Mawes’ Richard Holbrook, who was in 96th place out of the water, but in the ride he overtook 80 competitors to finish 12th.

Starting with an open water swim (700m) from Tatum’s beach, Portscatho, competitors arrived at Porthcurnick beach. From there they cycled (25k) to St Anthony headland, passing through St Mawes and towards the St Anthony lighthouse.

The final leg was an energy sapping 7k run along the coastal footpath towards the finish at The Plume of Feathers pub in Portscatho in the early afternoon.

Delighted

The Roseland Triathlon was organised by Barney Nicholls, who was delighted with the success of the event.

He said: “We have been planning this for quite some time and the feedback we have had has been incredible.

“It was a brilliant event and the competitors were amazed by the area.

“Considering this was the first time an event like this has been held in Roseland it went pretty smoothly. There were spectators lined up along the route to give everybody encouragement, which was rather pleasing.

“We will have a debriefing this week to discuss what to do next, but it won’t be a case of if but when we will be holding our next triathlon.”

On the route he designed, Nicholls took part in his first ever triathlon, coming a respectable 54th in a time of 2hr 3mins 4secs. Other ‘first-timers’ included Trethem’s Duncan Bryan, who came sixth (1hr 40mins 1sec).
