TAKING part is good, winning is even better! Mounts Bay took the county championship with a convincing performance against a strong Saltash side in the Cornwall Schools’ FA Under-16 Cup Final at Cornwall College.
Jack Ramsey opened the scoring just before half-time with a well placed free-kick leaving the Penzance school with a 1-0 lead at the interval.
As the second half began Saltash tore into the Mounts Bay defence with the fury of a lion but could not break down the resolute Tom Hendrickson, Jordan Anderson and Marcel Torode in a back four superbly organised by Adam George. Two outstanding saves by the agile Ollie Angove and a little help from the goalpost kept the lead intact before Harry Corin capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to put Bay 2-0 up.
The turning point came with a sublime chip by the excellent Ramsey as Mounts Bay finally took control of the game. Tireless running by Callum George and Rhys Brownfield sapped the energy from a strong Saltash midfield and the pace of wide men Max Bodilly and Stefan Osborne provided a constant threat to the Saltash defence. Further goals from Brownfield, Jack Lonsdale and Dylan Courtnay took the result to 6-0 as Saltash crumbled.
The result was a personal milestone for team manager Andy Harvey as this trophy was the only county football, rugby or cricket competition he had not won at some time in his 26 years at the school.
