Tesco ‘Every Little Helps’ in Saltash

The

gossip wheel is turning yet again on a new supermarket for Saltash. This time

it’s Tesco to have made a bid for a place in our humble town. Currently Saltash

only has a Lidl and Waitrose supermarkets near the Carkeel roundabout.

I

can confirm that Tesco will be attending the next Saltash Town Council this

evening at the Guildhall 13th May 2010 to talk to local councilors of

their intention to invest in the town. This is a pre-application stage and in

no way implies that there will be a Tesco in Saltash in the near future.

Saltash

is no stranger to supermarket battles. In 2008 Sainsburys bid to build a

superstore in Saltash was vehemently fought against by Waitrose.

The

main opposition to Sainsburys was location as they wanted to build on Warfelton

Green next to Kimberley Stadium with huge protests against the proposed site

and a march across Tamar Bridge in mass protest.

Work

has already begun on a new Tesco store and petrol station in Callington which

is expected to open in September this year creating 180 jobs. Maybe this is

exactly what Saltash needs.

A large Tesco store in

Saltash would certainly be convenient and cost wise it would be in between Lidl

and Waitrose giving far more choice. The fear is that superstores like Tesco’s

have their grubby hands in every pocket! They not only do food, they do

flowers, clothes, toys, books and stationary. How would a supermarket like that

‘help’ the already struggling shops along Fore Street?

The sooner one of the big four supermarkets is opened in Saltash, the better!

Fore Street is pretty much dead anyway: There's a distinct lack of choice in any shop, most of which are way too pricey or going out of business; only to be replaced with yet another charity shop!

Waitrose is too expensive for a full weekly shop; and all the items in Lidl keep changing and/or disappearing from the shelves, so you never know if you're going to be able to get the items you want or need.

The opening of a large supermarket would provide serious competition for the ridiculously overpriced shops and petrol stations around here, would create jobs, and would leave people with more spare cash with which to bolster the local economy.

Come on Tesco (or Asda or Sainsbury's or Morrisons), hurry up!!!

I think tescos would be great. cos you have a waitrose for the well off , a lidl for the poorer people so lets have a tesco for the inbetweeners, .There are people moaning about ldl but also cant afford to shop at waitrose so it makes sense.

Most people do there big shops over in Plymouth in Tesco, Asda,Sainsburys ect. So having our own Supermarket that really stocks a good range of products would keep people local and stop them going over the bridge.
If its in Fore street it would bring in trade to a dyeing shopping street. At least 6 shops are closed down already and I now see Rooms is closing down.
We need new life blood back in fore street, This could be what we need.
