the death of eminent entomologist George Carter Bignell, who lived the last
part of his life and died in Saltash.
His extensive insect
collection and work is recognised at the Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery and
the Natural History Museum in London. It is about time George Carter Bignell’s achievements
are also recognized in Saltash.
The Saltash Town
Council is looking at a Blue Plaque Scheme to commemorate George Carter Bignell’s
work in Saltash. The plaque will also enhance the Saltash History Trail.
A Blue Plaque is an
easily recognisable round blue sign installed in a public place to commemorate the
link between the place and a famous person and event serving as a historical
marker.
George Carter Bignell’s
Grandson David Hodge is hopeful that a Blue Plaque will be placed on the door
of where his grandfather died as a monument to him. David says that if the Blue Plaque goes ahead he will try to travel to the South West this year to see the plaque in place.
