A SALTASH supermarket manager and keen cyclist is getting ready for the ride of his life to help raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

Paul Guinan, of Waitrose Saltash, is representing the store in The Great Tour, a charity cycle event taking in all of mainland Britain’s coastline in 64 day-long stages.

The event aims to raise money for Caravan, the benevolent fund for the retail industry, as well as the Prostate Cancer Charity.

Paul said the prospect of the challenge coupled with the excellent charitable cause persuaded him to get involved.

He said: “I saw it as a personal challenge.

“The tour is a great way of raising awareness of the problems of prostate cancer.”

Challenge is an apt word for the task facing the store boss as the two final stages are among the hilliest on the tour including more than 4,000 metres of climbing.

Paul will participate in the event’s final two stages which will take the tour from Millbrook to Seaton, stopping overnight in Dartmouth.

He will be one of 2,000 participants cycling a combined 4,138 miles.

The guests are required to raise a participation fee of £50 to supplement the charitable donations.

Paul will be starting his involvement on the September 3.
