Would you like a Boardwalk on the Waterfront?

The Saltash Waterfront Residents Association (SWRA) has been looking at the idea of placing a boardwalk along the waterfront to tidy up and improve this popular area, either situated on the beach or along the car park which would push the cars two metres up.

Public opinion has been against a boardwalk on the beach for fear of losing the boats along the waterfront.

Ross Bibbey a local and patron of the Union said “I think a boardwalk is a bad idea, as we don’t want to lose the beach and the boats, that’s what makes the Waterfront what it is.”

Andy and Julie at Livewire do not like the idea of moving the cars closer to Livewire as they feel it may be unsafe for the young people in the evenings. The Sailing Club worries that they would not have enough space to bring boats in and out of the club every year.

Instead the SWRA are looking at creating an improved pavement area with seating available. Liam Bradley the chairman of the SWRA said, “Only the car parking spaces in front of the Union would be lost, which would create an open and relaxing area on the waterfront for everybody.”

Pete Lee and Sara Pritchard, the managers of the Union said, “I think it would be nice for our customers who sit outside on the table and chairs to have sea views”

Ross Bibbey and other patrons of the Union said, “Every Tuesday and Thursday the car park is full by the Sailing Club, so the public can’t use them anyway. People should park in the car park provided behind Ashtorre and leave more open space along the waterfront.”

I think a broadwalk is a great idea - I am surprised about the negative feedback. In my opinion, it would be great to be able to walk along the river-front without having to to come 'inland' to get past parked cars. It wouldn't bother me if it was over the sand or over concrete - whatever works best, but to able to walk a continuous path by the waters edge would be much nicer than the current situation.

The main problem with trying to get feedback is that! On the whole it's only the negative comments that people give. The happy guys (the majority) just enjoy and get on with life. It's very hard to stay motivated. But let's hope most do.

The SWRA have some nice ideas to improve the waterfront area for everybody - but they are just ideas at the moment - it would be nice to hear what everybody thinks about this?

Cheers for the clarity Jane. Well you have to start with ideas and progress from there. I think it is a great idea to make the place more attractive. And I do agree that it would be so nice to site outside the venues down there and have a nice view. The biggest thing though is to ensure it fits with those who actually live there.
