A New Tesco Supermarket for Saltash
By JanePublisher | Thursday, May 27, 2010, 13:10
Representatives
from Tesco Supermarket met with the Saltash Town Council on 13th May
2010 to propose a new Tesco Supermarket in Saltash and it looks like there will
be a new Tesco built on the current Motorworld/Suzuki garage. The garage will
be relocating as the owner wishes to expand the business. This is estimated to
give Saltash a gain of 22 jobs alone.
The
new Tesco store will be about the same size as Waitrose and aimed at weekly
shoppers with a limited non-food range and no café. There will be 220 part-time
and full-time jobs opening up at the store, which is the equivalent of 135
full-time jobs.
At
the moment there is no plan to build a petrol station to accompany the store
but the Council is aware of growing frustration with local people on the high
prices of petrol in Saltash and that a competitor could help lower prices.
The
Saltash Town Council feels that the impact on Fore Street will be minimal. The
impact to Saltash is thought to be mainly in its affect of the local co-op on
Fore Street. But co-op is usually regarded as a place for extra food shopping during
the week like bread and milk, rather than a place for the weekly shop.
There
will be approximately 210 parking spaces developed for the new store and Tesco
will be looking into running a public transport service directly to the
store. The proposal of improvements to the Carkeel Roundabout with new
traffic lights to ease congestion for the new supermarket is also under way.
There will be a public
consultation on 4th and 5th June at a venue to be confirmed.

Yeah! Great way to ingratiate yourself with the locals - how about tellin people what ya plan to be selling, how Tescos will improve the economy in any way rather than crumble independant shops on Fore Street? Will there be a garage that will be more competitive prices? etc. etc....

Tesco is the largest supermarket chain in the UK and has now more than 2282 stores within UK. It is not just an ordinary supermarket because it leads its way to new developments in terms of shopping.

ReportWhat would people like to see on Saltash Fore Street? There are a good variety of shops but if people are so easily swayed to swap Fore St for Tesco there is clearly something lacking in whats on offer. There are critics on here who I am sure could come up with valuable suggestions that would help existing traders and potential traders tailor the shopping opportunities to meet local need better. Personally I like the opportunities for small scale shopping with an independent butcher, greengrocer, baker, florist, hardware shop, shoe repairer, wool and haberdashery shop etc. Many communities no longer have those. There are other things I would like to see there too...some of the shops seem to do very little trade and haven't updated in a while. The charity shops are excellent and seem to do well. Instead of ****ging off Tesco and running down Fore st lets have some positive suggestions and see if we can make some really good things happen in our town.

ReportWhat is it with these people moaning about the impact on fore street,Whats on there?Charity shops(5 I think)Hairdressers(7)empty shops, overpriced supermarket, bookshop that really needs to look at it'self to encourage people to shop there,2 bakers and a few more little independent shops not my idea of a shopping experience,So tesco is going to kill the already dieing street I really don't think so,if anything it will bring more people into saltash and if these shops get there head together and work together it could be to their advantage. We need a petrol station because the 2 we have are fleecing the tourists when they come down to cornwall on holiday. As for the councillors giving their approval, about time they got their heads out of the sand and try to improve this area after all its first contact tourist have of cornwall.

ReportI think the arrival of tesco in Saltash would be terrible for the area. It's large car park and access to main roads would mean people would totally bypass the main street meaning this would certainly be the nail in the coffin for an already struggling Fore st. I see this as a terrible shame as it is currently one of the only ways for LOCAL food producers to to sell their produce to the public.
As for creating jobs, this is actually a false economy of sorts. Yes a few extra people will be employed directly by tesco (unskilled jobs, at minimum wage) but locally, it's presence will reduce the amount of work available as Tesco's non-competitive pricing closes down other fairer retailers. Once this has happened you will find that it takes £95,000 of sales on average to create a job in a Tesco, whereas for a smaller retailer to do this the figure is under half that at £42,000.
Then it's profits are taken OUT of OUR area to main office or to build another huge Tesco elsewhere. A study undergone in 2004 showed for every £1 spent in Tesco 90p leaves the area, but that same £1 spend with a local retailer is worth £1.76 to the local economy, and only 36 pence is spent out of the area.
The reason Tesco are able to be so much cheaper than Waitrose is because of their size, this allows them to have so much market control they can (and often do) treat their suppliers terribly unfairly often putting their businesses in trouble. Waitrose (although a supermarket) does do some good to the local area sponsoring local events. i am also aware they paid the full amount for Livewire youth project to have a new kitchen installed.
Since hearing of the first meeting between Tesco execs and our town councilors a couple months ago, I contacted Saltash town council on two separate occasions via email to inquire in to the status of the negotiations. On neither occasion did i get a response.
Even with this in mind, I was still mildly shocked, but very disappointed to read that when our town councilors gave Tesco the go ahead they also rejected the local independent bookshop's application to block them from selling books (the new tesco in Callington has strict conditions on what it is able to sell, as to not conflict with local business) They would be well within their rights to do this, and help local businesses who provide a far more varied selection of goods instead of the few top sellers Tesco would stock.
All this in mind I suggest that the new store will be noticeably damaging to the area and it's people. I would also like to know what on earth our town councilors were thinking when they gave the plans the go ahead and who's behalf they were acting upon? Mine and yours? Don't think so, Local traders? Definitely not!
