I thought it was going to be steel plated with copper, rather than plastic?! And at 62 foot tall, that would be an enormous weight of granite! It's a modern interpretation - times change.
I can't fault the scheme at all - I think it will be a great addition to Saltash. Not just the cross, but the fact it will bring a park back into use.
But I guess my opinion doesn't count, I only live in Saltash, I wasn't born or brought-up here...
i recently came to live here. I went shopping with my friend for some clothes, the shops are for old farts, ditto shoe shops.went to the local greasy spoon cafe hardly The Americano is it ?. like goiing back to the 70'S espescially looking at some of the yokels, look they only have a bath once a week, On a Sunday!

ReportI completely agree, CharlesHawtrey. Saltash is very boring. Imagine my suprise when I walked past the gift shop and they were selling GOLLYS! They were banned in the 70's! AND I saw goldfish being sold in a bag in the fair, I thought it was banned 30 years ago! Darling Boutique and Rowes, oh, exciting shopping in Saltash.
cranky at the concil,SURE. Ellwell rd, renamed without consultation.Longstanding Ellwell rd leading to Ellwell lane and Ellwell woods has been renamed Locker ter.For all of us who live in this area know Locker ter is mostly on Ellwell rd,it is not Ellwell rd. How did this happen surely cant be right.

Not sure how this discussion went from a moan about the imminent new Cross to lack of shops, to pasties and Gollys and then on to road name changes, but I guess Elwell road (note 3 L's not 4) is beside where the new cross will go, so perhaps we have come full circle!
After a very quick look at the large scale OS maps it looks like the Terrace of houses itself is called Lockyer Terrace, but the road remains Elwell Road. This happened quite a lot historically, and is a cartographer's nightmare. Greenbank Road in Plymouth is a classic example where you have Whitefield Terrace and Woodfield Terrace either side of Greenbank Road.
Maps from the 1970's have the houses labelled Lockyer Terrace and the Road Elwell Road too. Jamie.
So, I guess, in conclusion, has the road name definitely been changed? or is it a simple mistake? If it has been changed, not quite sure why an uproar is necessary, as the road is just 100 yards long and all 19 houses on it already have a label (Lockyer Terrace), so it would simply remove a line from your address. If it has definitely been changed and you think it is worth fighting for, take it up with the authorities!
The road sign for Ellwell rd has beed removed and replaced with Locker ter on request from cllr Mr Ellison. yes ido think its worth fighting for and all ready taken it up with the authorities. Brian Cotton

it's a wonder cllr Ellison did'nt try to try to get it named ELLISON RD. I think we should start a petition to have the original name reinstated , my biggest gripe though is still this plastic abomination he's calling a Cornish Celtic cross it's a bloody disgrace : saltashron

I think I would be more concerned about other things than a road name change (like parking for any visitors when the cross is actually built), when all they are doing is simplifying it. Why does it need two names?
But fair enough, if you feel that strongly and think it is worth fighting for, go for it, but if I were you I would make sure you spell them both correctly in any written correspondence!
Jamie Q1 I was wondering just why we need car parking when the imitation celtic cross is in place , Ellwell woods I thought was a nature reserve, a place of safety for our local wild life, not a car park : saltashron

ReportI'm not suggesting that the cross is going to draw visitors like Stonehenge, or even the Angel of the North, like it is being compared to in terms of height etc, but it will be a visible landmark crossing the bridge, so I know people will want to see it/stop to photograph it etc etc, so I would have thought it would need some sort provision for this. Not looked at the plans in any detail, so not sure if they have even thought about this - personally, a car park for half a dozen or so cars under the bridge with access from Lower Fore St would suffice, but I'm no planner!
I think people in Saltash should look at this page: http://tinyurl.com/lycb4t
