Why is there never any move to provide a Park and Ride at Carkeel? Where are all the "Green" campaigners who should be promoting this? Saltash Council don't seem to be banging the drum about it. Could it be that the loss of revenue on the Tamar Bridge is the stumbling block?

Not until there is a safe way for non-motorised users to cross the very busy Saltash Bypass at Carkeel Roundabout I hope.

By definition a "park and ride" is for people to drive there and park, therefore there would not be a requirement of a crossing for non-motorised users. They could still catch the bus or train in Saltash as they do now.

Yes - of course you are right. "Park & Ride".
But this will generate more traffic at Carkeel making it even more unsafe for non-motorised users to cross the busy Saltash Bypass there: and pedestrians and other non-motorised users are also traffic and there needs need to be taken into account.

The latest news I have regarding this unsafe crossing is in a letter from the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department of Transport saying "the proposed footbridge scheme achieved a score of 7 out of a possible 10 - meanwhile the Highways Agency is continuing actively to look for lower cost solutions at this locality"

I think any 'park and ride' scheme does need to take the lack of a safe crossing into account in the interest of both motorised and non-motorised users.

I take your point if the Park and Ride were at Carkeel roundabout, but I don't think there would be sufficient space close to the roundabout. There are surely alternatives available like Broadmoor Farm or on the Saltash to Callington Road. Perhaps the Highways Agency is waiting for Tesco to fund the crossing that would make it easier for non-motorised traffic to get to Waitrose. I must confess that I have never seen a great deal of pedestrian traffic wanting to cross the A38 at Carkeel and I use that road several times a day, it makes one wonder where they are all coming from and going to? I would expect most Waitrose shoppers either take advantage of the wonderful free bus service or drive there.

Very interesting idea to have a park and ride at Carkeel roundabout - I have never thought about this before. Saltash is becoming a rather large town but do we really need one??

Saltash plus outlying areas such as Callington, Liskeard, Launceston and all outlying villages makes for a huge catchment area. Many villages do not have a regular bus service so could take advantage of just having to drive a part of the way to Plymouth. Some may even decide to have a look around Saltash.
