SALTASH PROBUS CLUB

Now in its 22nd. year, the Club has enjoyed some successful meetings and events over the last few months. In May we had an interesting talk by local historian Martin Lister about the various social events in Saltash from the Norman times through the ages to the present day.

On 6 June members and guests celebrated Jubilee week with a buffet lunch at Ashtorre Rock Community Centre followed by an absorbing illustrated talk by local mountaineer Edward Buckingham about his climb up Mount Everest. Two weeks later we enjoyed a boat trip up the river Tamar to Morwellham Quay.spending two hours there before returning to Saltash.

At our meeting on 4 July we welcomed guest speaker Sue Hooper MBE (four times former Mayor of Saltash) who described the tragic life of Violette Szabo a young undercover agent sent into France immediately after D-Day. At our second July meeting, Sue Murch and Muriel Hocking gave a fascinating very well illustrated talk about their adventure trekking in the Himalayas.

Saltash Probus Club, founded in October 1991, is one of a nationwide chain of clubs to enable retired professional men or businessmen to socialise. We have regular meetings at 10am on the 1st. and 3rd. Wednesdays of each month at Saltash Guildhall usually with a guest speaker. The Club has about 30 active members and would welcome some new members. Those interested should contact the Chairman, Ted Parr on 01752 847612 or the Secretary, Bruce Crowhurst on 01752 846835 or Email:- bruce.crowhurst@talktalk.net.

Also we are always looking for new speakers and would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to give a suitable talk.
