The town council and its partners in the 'Saltash Town-centre Improvement Group' (STIG) have organised the scheme to be paid for by 'section 106' monies from supermarkets already built in the town. They are paying Cornwall Council the full costs of the money they would otherwise have taken in parking fees.
Saltash Town Mayor Cllr. Colin Oakes said: "Saltash Town Council's highest priority is the regeneration of the Town Centre; it is of the utmost importance to our community. We are also grateful for Cornwall Council's work to allow us to carry out the scheme - working in partnership is what localism should be all about."
STIG Co-Chair Cllr. Adam Killeya added: "Christmas is a critical period for our Town Centre and we felt that it was vital to come up with a scheme that supported local Christmas shopping in Saltash. All of the traders on our group, along with the Chamber of Commerce and Saltash CIC, felt that this would make a big difference."
The free parking period will include the Saltash Christmas Event on Saturday 3rd December which will be a great day out for all the family with stalls, lantern parade, entertainment and the Christmas lights to be switched on by the new Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Details of the Christmas event can be found on Saltash People soon.
