Cornwall College Saltash has opened a new a la carte dining service which will be offered at the campus on Tuesday evenings between 5pm and 6pm. Open to the general public the bistro, named La Passerelle, will offer guests the chance to enjoy a range of gastronomic delights prepared, cooked and served by students studying on Professional Cookery and Hospitality courses.

The name La Passerelle, French for 'the gateway', was chosen by the students who wanted to incorporate the fact that Saltash, with its famous bridge, is often seen as the gateway to Cornwall.
The addition of the bistro adds an extra dimension to the courses as students will be able to not only train in an industry standard kitchen but also have the substantial benefit of having real customers to cook for and serve.
Head Chef Lecturer Jan Langley said: "The added realism will prepare them for industry in a way that learning the theory just can't achieve. It's also a real pleasure for us to be able to open up our fantastic kitchen and dining area and to be able to show off the skills our students have learnt so far."
The Tuesday evening service will be an à la carte three course menu changing theme weekly and using the best of fresh sustainable, local and seasonal ingredients.
"This year's groups are fired up and ready to go and really looking forward to the challenge," said Chef Lecturer Chris Penk. "They are keen to produce the best food and deliver the best service they can for all of our diners."
Prices for the meals are going to be kept low with three courses costing just £10 and each Tuesday students will get to work together with their lecturers to finalise and tweak the week's menus.
