The countdown to the May 2013 elections has begun and Cornwall Council has launched a new campaign to encourage people to stand to become Cornwall Councillors. Entitled 'Would you stand for it?' they're hoping to attract potential candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds.

They describe the ideal councillor as someone who is passionate about their community, someone who cares about how services are prioritised and how the budget is allocated and someone who would enjoy making decisions to help shape the future for Cornwall.

A councillor fair is being held at County Hall in Truro on Saturday 26 January to give prospective candidates the chance to find out more about the role of a Cornwall Councillor and the Council, and meet their political group if they have one.

Richard Williams, the senior officer responsible for overseeing elections and supporting councillors in their roles, says:

"To be an effective councillor, you need to be accomplished at juggling. Elected members not only need to find the balance between their civic responsibilities, work and family, but the role of a councillor will require looking after the interests of constituents whilst, at the same time, taking part in meetings and other aspects of the democratic process."

Registration for the councillor fair can be done online at www.cornwall.gov.uk/beacouncillor by emailing beacouncillor@cornwall.gov.uk or by calling 01872 322140.
